North Carolina Pheasant Hunting

Based upon the old English driven pheasant hunts, this style of hunting allows a new venue for those interested in doing a bird hunt. When you're looking for something new and fun, try one of these. We typically shoot pheasants, but sometimes we may throw in a special surprise. Birds are "launched" from our special tower, while hunters are positioned around the field to try their skill at these fast flying birds.

Buchanan Shoals offers private and corporate pheasant towers shoots to the public. Tower shoots offer great, high volume shooting that is perfect for a corporate outing or entertaining clientele. Most of our tower shoots involve the release of 500 pheasants, evenly distributed over a designated number of rounds.

The ring-neck pheasant is well adapted for life on the ground and will take to flight only when there is no other means of escape. Powerful leg muscles enable this beautiful game bird to swiftly retreat to cover, taking 18 to 24-inch strides. When threatened, a pheasant will burst into flight with a rapid flurry of short wing beats, rise a short distance, lock its wings, and glide into protective cover. Upon landing, a few quick strides will usually complete the escape.

Drake Landing offers a great bird hunting experience. Drake Landing has professionally trained dogs and guides. Continental tower shoots are also available. Jones Island Club is a private outdoor recreation club for members and guest only. The club is not available for daily hunts and use by the general public. To be eligible for membership, an individual must be sponsored by at least two existing members of the club. All applications are reviewed and subject to approval by the Board of Directors. At least once each year the club hosts a Pheasant tower shoot at the tower facility located on the island, normally during the Thanksgiving weekend activities

Pheasants are released from a wooded, hidden area. The birds climb to treetop height and streak across the sky in all directions. There are 20 shooting stations that rotate in a circle so everyone has a fair chance to harvest a large quantity of birds. Two to four boxes of shells per shooter are recommended. This European style pheasant shoot is a perfect activity for corporate outings or fundraisers. All birds are breasted and divided equally among the shooters. A large country style lunch or dinner follows the shoot.

In keeping with the traditional European Pheasant Hunt, the tower shoot is designed to resemble the English shooting sport of Pheasant Hunting. Shelter Creek Plantation has a site built specific 65 foot pheasant tower centered in the middle of a shooting field. There are 10 shoot bales situated 50 yards out from tower and 50 yards apart in a 360 circle around tower. This enables the shooters a sporting chance to see each bird as it is released from the tower and which direction the bird is flying to escape the open area.

While quail is the primary game sought at Six Runs, there are abundant populations of ducks, wild turkeys, and deer. Ring neck pheasant and chukar partridge are also available for the hunter’s pleasure. Beavers living on Six Runs River have formed a number of ponds that offer haven to a large population of wild wood and mallard ducks. There are many permanent deer stands positioned throughout the woods on the plantation offering the aspiring deer hunter the chance at a trophy buck.
